The fake eggs has been around much like real eggs in Malaysia, warned the Consumers Association of Penang (CAP).
A housewife in Plow Tikusu Penang, Malaysia. She tried to cook eggs she bought, she noticed it looks and smells different to normal eggs. Since she heard of fake eggs from radio, she contact the association filed by consumers.
According to the housewife, this egg has no taste and unlike real eggs its shape is different and has rough surface.
The fake egg has no chalaza to hold the center of the yolk, once you crack it the egg white and the yolk blend straight away. In the store she purchased, one pack with 30 real eggs were 10.50 ringgit (about $3 USD), whereas the fake eggs with same amount were sold for 11 ringgit (about $3.20 USD). Surprisingly, they were selling the fake ones slightly higher than the real ones.
These fake eggs are widely available in China and Taiwan. Fake egg manufactory in china made eggs for 1/10 of the regular egg price and wholesale them for half price. In contrast, people who prefer to purchase better eggs get tricked in Malaysia.
From the fear of bird flu, importing eggs are prohibited in Malaysia. Department of Health and Welfare in Penang, is taking legal action and seek out those responsible for this sale of fake eggs.
